AT THE CONNAUGHT
London
2008

Client : Maybourne Group
30-seat restaurant & 50-seat bar

Around a soft palette of lavender, grey and dune tones, the Connaught appears new and timeless. Constrained by having to reuse the hotel’s furniture, India Mahdavi reupholstered all the elements. The natural leather, prune velvet and medallion carpets reveal a contemporary vision of Mayfair, a polychrome and pop vision, that echoes the artwork and the graphic touch of this emblematic London establishment. Suspended to the panelling are Julian Opie’s cameos which contribute to a collective memory. It’s as if, in this new but familiar realm, India Mahdavi had reinvented an imaginary past, and engraved the Coburg Bar of this classic hotel at heart of a legend and an eternal London.
